"Capturing Life"

Why in the world would I blog?

My first blog post; what to write about?  Hmmmm.   How about beginning with why I want to do a blog?

I have no idea why I want to do a blog.  I tend to jump into things sometimes without much forethought.  It actually seems to serve me well; I did the same thing when I decided to take on a 365 day photo challenge, taking pictures every day and uploading one per day to a group on Flickr.  I wanted to grow in my photography, wanted to have some purpose for it other than loading pictures onto a digital photo frame hanging on my living room wall.  I found this group on Flickr called 365-DPS Assignment.  It was the best “jump in” decision I’ve made in a long time.

In the year of challenge, my photography grew immensely.  I struggled initially with creativity, feeling as if I just could not create anything original, that most of what I did was to look at examples of other people’s work and then copy it.  As the year progressed, I still approached my photography that way but found that I was taking more and more liberties with my own creative visions.  I even asked a friend of mine to help carry my wing back chair into the woods so that I could capture self-portraits for one of my daily assignments.  That chair also was set on the beach for more self-portraits.  It was so fun and if I’d had more time I would love to have taken that chair around the small island I live on and capture various scenes with me in that chair.

My family was my willing subject in many photos, and they were also my patient onlookers as I stopped numerous times to take pictures throughout the year.  I actually learned how to take photo’s from a vehicle moving at 70 mph because it was far simpler to do that than to ask my husband to keep pulling over every time I saw something I wanted a photo of.  He would have done it, but then we would never have arrived any place on time!

So what am I going to do with a blog?  To be honest, I’m not really sure.  I am actually working towards a joint blog venture with 3 other photographer friends whom I met in the Flickr 365 group; we plan to begin our joint blog after the first of the year, so I thought it might be a good time to practice up on this whole blogging thing and learn how to do it.  In the mean time, I am hoping to use this as my own personal photography journal. I need some place for all those photo’s I take to reside and this seems to be a likely place.

So, we’ll just see what happens, where this goes, and where my photographic vision takes me.  If you don’t mind meandering a bit through my life, seeing the world through my eyes, and watching the wins, losses, and in-between in my photographic life, then feel free to follow along and see what I’m up to.  Maybe you will find yourself pictured here on this page one day.

Or, maybe not.
